Long-term capital gains
How this works: For listed shares and equity mutual funds, gains are long-term after 12 months and taxed at 12.5% on the amount above the ₹1.25 lakh yearly exemption; sell sooner and short-term gains are taxed at 20%. For property, gold and other assets, gains are long-term after 24 months and taxed at 12.5% without indexation; sell sooner and the gain is added to your income and taxed at your slab. Debt mutual funds bought on or after 1 April 2023 are taxed at your slab whatever the holding period. Figures exclude surcharge and 4% cess. If you bought property before 23 July 2024 you may instead opt for 20% with indexation — worth comparing with a CA. Educational estimate, not tax advice. See also our tax regime calculator.
